DoorBird makes a wide range of IP video door stations, and the model codes (D1101, D2101, D21DKV, D31, A-series…) aren’t exactly self-explanatory. Here’s a plain-English way to choose the right one — and the network details that trip people up.
Start with your property
- Single-family home — a single-call station in the D1101 / D2101 family is usually right. Choose surface or flush mount, with optional keypad and RFID.
- Apartment or multi-tenant building — you need multiple call buttons or a modular system such as the D21DKV or D31, plus a plan for per-unit routing and building wiring.
- Gate or driveway — prioritize a station with a relay for gate/door release, and check distance and network reach to the entry.
- Office or commercial — access control, multiple entries, RFID, and phone-system (SIP) integration usually come into play; DoorBird’s A-series access devices may fit alongside a door station.
Then check the essentials
- Mount: surface (easier retrofit) vs flush (cleaner look, more work).
- Entry method: app-only, keypad code, RFID fob, or a mix.
- Network: DoorBird stations connect over Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) or, preferably, PoE (Power over Ethernet) for a stable wired connection.
- Internet: a reliable connection is needed for app calls, notifications, and remote features.
Don’t forget integrations
DoorBird discontinued native HomeKit, Alexa, and Google, so if you want it in your smart home we bridge it through Home Assistant or Homebridge, or connect SIP phones, NVRs, Control4, Loxone, and KNX. Factor that into your model and wiring choice up front.
